Solar Power Is Cheaper Than Nuclear for the First Time

Here’s bright spot in the news of the day: energy from new solar installations has, for the first time, become cheaper than energy from new nuclear plants, according to a new Duke University study.

…The main cost of nuclear is NOT actually building it. It’s working with all the regulators and making sure everything is up to code that is actually an ancient code that hasn’t been updated in 30 years. The cost of Nuclear is truly 1/10th of what it is currently listed at if we had good but not excessive regulation.
For example, there are $20 valves that are inspected for quality, given a Nuclear rating and then cost $2000. This is maintained because the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) has only approved certain manufacturers to build Nuclear rated equipment. The problem is because the NRC is backwards looking, and only wants to do what has been done in the past. They only approve people who have already done the work before, and they only approve the type of work that has been done before. One supplier means he can charge whatever the hell he wants. It’s a multi-billion dollar project right? What is a couple of thousand percent markup?
Nuclear is stuck in a regulatory trap. The old nuclear power plants…

A solar-powered airplane that can fly at night

It has the wingspan of a jumbo jet, weighs around the same as an SUV, and stayed aloft through the dead night on stored solar energy. Welcome to the future of zero-carbon air travel

…The world’s first solar-powered plane capable of flying at night has completed a 26-hour test flight in the skies over Switzerland. The one-man aircraft, which resembles an enormous glider and has the same wingspan as an Airbus 340, relied on stored solar energy as it flew loops over Lake Neufchatel and nearby mountains at an average speed of 26 mph. It was developed by Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard. This is a “wonderful achievement,” says James Fallows in The Atlantic. Flying for more than day “without using a drop of gasoline” is a feat of human endeavor worth celebrating. Airline emissions are a “major environmental threat,” says Sean McLachlan in AOL’s Gadling blog, and we have to find some way of dealing with them. “Think of…

How A Solar-Powered Plane Flew For 24 Straight Hours Wednesday

An experimental solar-powered plane successfully flew for 24 hours, fueled solely by the power of the sun. So do we have some sweet seat sales coming our way, or what? The answer to that would be no, not anytime soon anyway.

…the team that designed the plane doesn’t see it becoming the norm quite yet, according to the Associated Press. (See pictures of the plane in flight.)
The emissions-free plane uses solar cells and the sun to fly, and has now proven that it can store enough power during the day to continue flying throughout the night. The plane is the result of years of planning and was designed as a way to promote energy-efficient technology.
A second round-the-world flight is now in the works but isn’t thought to happen until 2013.
So while this is a landmark flight for emissions-free travel, it looks we’re going to be flying in regular, fuel-powered planes for at least our next few vacations….

Click Here To Visit Official WebsiteThis article on produce green energy is a sincere attempt from our side to provide you with substantial information about produce green energy. The substantiality is that solar power, solar energy and green diy energy are basically referring to the same device, so don ‘ t lease that confuse, and stop you from moving forward. They each touch to man ‘ s ability to harness power from the sun and to storeroom it for use as desired. The senile circumstances of countless names for pretty much the same item.Fortunately:- It does work- It saves money and energy - It can be fun- And you sense you are helping the planet by doing article toward ” going unfinished “.But can I do it?For the man to do so use to be so expensive, and complicated, that most would stop before they even got started. Not that the humans were at blemish, and they definitely had the right image, but it was just ” too much “, and the costs involved really made those interested…

Solar-Powered Bamboo Radio to Save Madagascar Economy

A design student form the University of Plymouth, Becky Barber, has come up with a radio design intended to spark up a cottage industry in Madagascar, an island that is equally as beautiful as it is rife with economic and ecological troubles.

…Physorg writes, “After meeting with aid organizations on her most recent trip earlier this year, Becky found that they were very receptive to her proposed project, as radios could enable agencies to communicate with remote villages to provide both important health updates and also act as education channels.”

Bamboo is a favorite material among designers who focus on sustainability since it grows at an incredible pace. Solar cells are also a favorite, since it means gadgets can be freed from the electrical grid. The materials can be kept to a cost minimum, making starting up workshops for producing the radios a bit easier.

She’s developed two designs, one for a desktop and one that is portable, and she hopes that they can be sold in both Madagascar as well as in England.

As Barber’s project highlights,…

Solar Impulse, The Solar-Powered Airplane, Tries To Fly 24 Hours

A solar-powered airplane, named the Solar Impulse, means to prove, once and for all, that harnessing the energy of the Sun is a good and practical idea.

…A solar-powered airplane, named the Solar Impulse, means to prove, once and for all, that harnessing the energy of the Sun is a good and practical idea. I mean, why would we try to capture some of the energy put out by a completely free nuclear reactor hanging in the sky? The plane took off from Switzerland a little bit ago, and will try to fly for 24 hours without stopping. Here’s hoping it’s a great success.

Stanford Heats Up Solar Power With New Harnessing Technology

A Stanford University research group says it found a way to more than double current solar power production efficiency. The technology uses both light and heat from the sun and is inexpensive enough that, if it pans out, it might be able to compete with oil.

…Larger Solar/Thermal plants in Spain compete with the price of oil today. As Asians mobilize in the millions of cars China produces today, sharp competition will arise for a gallon of gasoline bought in Yuan or American fiat dollars! Watch the prices soar. $80.00, U.S. a barrel oil of today is a bargain for Americans but how will they fare with higher prices in the future the Asian world does not sleep!
To offset the anticipated higher prices for oil and its scarcity in decades to come, China has, up and running, nuclear/electricity powered, electric bullet train networks, complete with veggies and rice eating workers and all the associated infrastructures, manufacturing, as we speak, products for the American and World markets at prices nobody else can compete with. These good folks produce oil free, and independent of the price of oil in the world they have huge pricing leverage in the market place and have done away with competition form the U.S.A.
This Chinese model is being duplicated all over Asia, and…

Mars rover could improve solar power efficiency on Earth

Technology designed to help NASA scientists explore Mars could hold the secret to solving the world’s energy problems by improving solar power efficiency, experts claim.

…Dr Malay Mazumder, who helped create the technology for NASA, said it could
help boost efficiency of large solar power plants, many of which are
situated in arid and dusty desert locations.

“A dust layer of 4g per square metre decreases solar power conversion by 40
per cent,” said Dr Mazumder, from Boston University.

“In Arizona, dust is deposited each month at over four times that amount.
Deposition rates are even higher in Australia, the Middle East, and India.”

The technology, used on the Mars rovers since they landed on the planet in
2004, involves coating the solar panel surface with electrodes of Indium tin
oxide, a transparent, electrically-sensitive material.

Sensors monitor dust levels on the surface of the panel and energise the
material when dust concentration reaches a critical level.

Electrodes on the panels then produce a cascading wave of electrostatic
pulses, which shake off the dust leaving them clean and more energy
efficient.

Dr Mazumder said the process…
